10 Thoughts about God’s Calling, from People Who Answered it.

Is God calling you? If he was, how would you know? if he is, how do you know? And if you heard him call, would you answer?

Spend enough time around a group of Christians and I guarantee you that Gods calling will come up in conversation. Its a big question, and one which can weigh heavy on people’s minds. After all, The uncertainty of the future is a hard thing to deal with, even before you put God (Who is your King) into the mix. Now even though this is a question that is asked a lot, in my experience, Christians generally don’t seem to know how to answer it. The reason I think this is because “Gods calling” is usually, if not always, talked about in the form of a question and we don’t add a question marks to things we understand. Now I’m not saying that I know everything about the subject. I wish I did! Honestly have several questions myself, which is part of the reason I want to write about this topic.

I’m excited to start learning more about how my Lord communicates with us and I hope you come along for the ride. God’s calling, will be the topic on Saturdays. Next week we will get into some of the Biblical and Theological stuff. But today I would like to break into the subject by listening to what some people who answered the call have to say about it.

“God does not choose people because of their ability, but because of their availability.”

Brother Andrew

“God did not direct His call to Isaiah— Isaiah overheard God saying, “. . . who will go for Us?” The call of God is not just for a select few but for everyone. Whether I hear God’s call or not depends on the condition of my ears, and exactly what I hear depends upon my spiritual attitude.”

Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

“Raising your children to love and serve Jesus is fulfilling one of God’s highest callings upon your life.”

Elizabeth George

“Everyone will be forgotten, nothing we do will make any difference, and all good endeavors, even the best, will come to naught. Unless there is God. If the God of the Bible exists, and there is a True Reality beneath and behind this one, and this life is not the only life, then every good endeavor, even the simplest ones, pursued in response to God’s calling, can matter forever.”

Tim Keller on “Why Calling Matters”

“When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

“We are all priests before God, there is no such distinction as ‘secular or sacred.’ In fact, the opposite of sacred is not secular; the opposite of sacred is profane. In short, no follower of Christ does secular work. We all have a sacred calling.”

Ravi Zacharias, The Grand Weaver: How God Shapes Us Through the Events of Our Live

“The maid who sweeps here kitchenis doing the will of God just as much as the monk who prays – not because she may sing a Christian hymn as she sweeps but because God loves clean floors. The Christian shoemaker does his Christian duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.”

Martin Luther

“One good deed is more worth than a thousand brilliant theories. Let us not wait for large opportunities, or for a different kind of work, but do just the things we “find to do” day by day.”

Charles Spurgeon

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

Frederick Buechner
